Crimson Neo-Viper – “Cobra Royal Guard”

crimsonneo-viper11The sculpt for the Crimson Neo-Viper is exactly the same as the sculpt for the “Attack on the PIT” Neo-Viper, they only changed the coloring of the body parts.

I have to say, coming into this review, my thoughts on the Neo-Vipers as a whole was not very positive. I feel that their masks/helmets look great on the card art, but somehow they translated very poorly into figure form. The Neo-Viper Commandos are the worst, with their facial sculpts looking really distorted. The plain Neo-Vipers however, are better, but not by much.

The head sculpt is detailed, with fine lines all over the helmet, and deep eye sockets for a grim look. I still feel, however, that the sculpt came off poorly, and it reminds me of an “gray alien” head, or a monkey. Its almost as if they put too much detail into the sculpt, and made it go from a mask to some sort of warped metal face.

crimsonneo-viper12The body is also very detailed, with red armored pads beingĀ  present on the shoulders, forearms and hands. The pads are all a little ’round’ for my tastes, but they get the job done, are well detailed, and do not hinder movement, so I can live with them. The hands are decently sculpted, they can grip all of his weapons correctly

The Crimson Neo-Viper has a removable armored chest piece, and beneath it he is wearing a ribbed shirt (The same mold as the Elite-Viper). The shirt is molded well, and the figure looks proportional with, or without his armored vest on, which is nice.

The lower waist has a molded on belt, generic pants and knee pads, and some big red strap on boots. The boots come off as a little too much to me, but they go with the color scheme I suppose.

I think the sculpt looks better in red than gray (Regular Neo-Viper is gray), but it doesn’t win any awards in my book.

  1. I was going through the gi joe figures with my son this evening and i got to looking at this figure close up. I never paid it much attention when he first bought them. After i looked at it comparatively with the original neo-viper i liked this version much better.

Some simple thing they did to spruce this version up was actually paint the shoulder pauldrons. The original neo-viper’s were plain black like the rest of the sleeve. The cobra logo was also tampo printed on the side of the shoulder pauldron rather than on the front of the sleeve. For some reason Hasbro gets a hard one from printing the insignias on the front of the arms rather than the sides of the arm like they would be in real life.

The red is just awesome. On this figure. Not a color or style i would choose if this figure were based on real life, but the red metalized look is just incredible.
