Battlefield: Bad Company 2

The Future..

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 continues the story of “B Company”, in the present or near future, and follows their actions trying to stop the Russian Federation from acquiring a weapon of mass destruction, codenamed: Aurora. Bad Company 2 maintains the squad-based combat of its predecessor, as well as the destructible environments. In fact, in this game the destructible environments (Codenamed: Destruction 2.0) have been massively upgraded. You can take down three-story buildings with enough rockets or C4. You can easily blow a hole in a concrete wall to create an improvised firing position. A forest blocking your view? Cut it down with a mounted .50 cal. on your HMMWV. The freedom the game engine gives you is incredible, you can really tackle objects as you see fit most of the time.

My favorite part from the original Bad Company, the humor, makes a return as well, though it is much more muted this time around. The story is, arguably, more serious and the script tackles it with a much darker tone. There is still plenty of great banter between the squad mates, with a particularly hilarious bit about the movie Predator coming during one of the missions in the Chilean jungle. However, I felt like they really toned it down, to the games detriment in my opinion. The story was good, though not remarkable, it proceeds nicely and leaves another sequel just begging to be made.

One of the mainstays of the Battlefield franchise is vehicles, and they make a return for Bad Company 2. Through the campaign you get to drive a M1A2 Abrams, a HMMWV, control a UAV and ride in a UH-60 Blackhawk. Most of the game is still spent on foot, with most of the great vehicle action taking place in the online component.
