Modern Warfare 3 Review

Multiplayer is the main reason why anybody buys and plays a COD game and this edition doesn’t disappoint. Multiplayer is much like before with some added features like 3 new strike packages that you can select. You can choose Assault for a more offensive minded attack. Support is more of a defensive playing style that doesn’t reset after each death like the rest of the classes. The 3rd and final package is the Specialist package which is geared more towards tacticians.

I tended to stick with the Assault as I’m more of a run and gunner and I like to earn my kill streaks the old fashioned way. I will say that some of my friends who aren’t at the skill level of a more dominant player, really enjoyed the other packages. It allowed them to earn higher skill streaks as it doesn’t reset after each death. The downside to this is the kill streaks aren’t as rewarding. Another change from last years game is the leveling up process.

You no longer have to buy new weapons and perks. You now have to level up your guns as you play, and unlock new guns and attachments as you march your way up to the new Prestige cap of 80. They have also added a Prestige Token feature, every time you Prestige, you get a token that you can use to gain double XP, a new custom class or a unique callsign.

The most common game mode is Team Death Match, while the more “hardcore’s” tend to play Search and Destroy or Domination, all the other mode are back like Free For All and Capture the Flag. They have also added 2 new game modes called Kill Confirmed and Team Defender. Kill Confirmed is just like Team Death Match only every time a player dies he drops a dog tag. You can then go collect your kill’s dog tag for additional points. Other members of your team can collect them for you or the other team can grab the tags to prevent you from gaining the extra points.

At first I really enjoyed this mode however after awhile the bright red and yellow dog tags became very distracting and as I was going to collect them I was often gunned down. This new mode was suppose to be an answer for campers however it actually increases camping. You can make a long range kill, then just sit by and focus on the Dog Tags and then smoke everybody who tries to go after them. No matter how many times I told myself that I wasn’t going to go after tags anymore, when your in the moment and you see a Dog Tag, instinct kicks in and you run for it.

I have since determined that this mode isn’t for me. I didn’t play Team Defender very much. In this new mode, the first player to die drops a flag. You then try to capture the flag. While your team is in control of the Flag you gain double points. When I played this mode, once we captured the flag, we stayed in one secure location and set a perimeter around the flag holder and protected him against the other team. A cool twist to Capture the Flag however once again that isn’t the game mode for me.
