G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra Game Review

The game flow has you starting a stage and getting briefed on your mission.  Once you get to certain checkpoints of the mission,  various other characters will assist you with mission updates on what is happening and what you need to do.  The game is linear with a few open areas spread around.  You start the game with only 2 available characters,  Duke and Scarlett.  As you progress through the game you will unlock more characters either by finding their dog tags or by completing missions.  When your doing the single player campaign,  you can switch back and forth between the 2 Joes at a click of a button.  If you chose to play with a friend,  your one Joe and he’s the other,  no trading back and forth.

Your main focus is taking out various enemies in order to get to a Cobra Boss.  These enemies are Cobra Soldiers,  B.A.T.’s,  vehicles and turrets etc.  It’s a very simple concept.  You have no ammo limitations,  your health automatically regenerates when you take cover and you rarely run into a real challenge.  You fight a large wave of enemies,  move up on the map,  fight another large wave of enemies and repeat.  The targeting system is automatic however you can switch your targets with the right analog stick.  This is useful as sometimes the game automatically targets an enemy that your not trying to target.  As you proceed through the game you will notice breakable items that contain special attack and point bonuses.   The special attacks come in handy and you are limited to only carrying 3 at a time.  These special attacks are unique for each Joe.  Duke fires a grenade,  Ripcord sets down a automated turret and Scarlett fires a wide homing shot.  These special attacks are a fun edition as well as essential to completing your missions on the higher difficulties.

As you continue to defeat enemies and as you do it without taking damage,  a Delta 6 Accelerator Suit meter charges.  When this meter is full,  with a press of a button,  your Joes automatically change into the Suits for a limited time and you have some extremely powerful attacks.  This is added with a very cool touch of playing the “A Real American Theme Song”  from the 80’s Sunbow cartoons.  I must admit that I wasn’t a fan of the suits in the live action film however they are pretty damn cool in this game.
