DOOM 3: BFG Edition Review

I have so much to cover! I’ll start with the core game, Doom 3. It’s classified as a First Person Science Fiction Horror Game and that couldn’t be more accurate. It is a First Person Shooter but not like how current generation FPS games like Call of Duty or Medal Honor are. Doom 3 is a throwback, a true classic and quite frankly I had trouble adjusting at first. I’ve played shooters as long as I could remember going back to the Quake and Doom days. I’ve grown so accustomed to the current generation of games that it took me a good 5 hours of playtime to adapt.

Doom 3 BFG-1 Once I got accustomed to the unique controls and layout of the game, I was hooked! To add to the experience, I started playing the game with all the lights out and louder than usual volume. I know that makes me sound dorky but the honest truth is that it really improved the game experience. The game is extremely dark going so far as looking at a completely black screen on several occasions. That is until a demon Doom 3 BFG-2comes flying out of nowhere. Thankfully you have a mounted flashlight on your armor with a limited battery life. This is a new upgrade to the BFG Edition. The original game forced you to switch out a gun to use the flashlight.

Doom 3 BFG-3As I was saying, the game intentionally tries to startle and scare you. Demons will break through panels that you’ve already walked by and attack. Often times right when you open a door a enemy is flying at you with blazing speed. Explosions, creeks, PA systems, broken glass and several other things that you take for granted in games with give you chills. I haven’t felt like this playing a game since the original Resident Evil and Doom 3 blows that out of the water.
