DOOM 3: BFG Edition Review

Doom 3 BFG-14One of the things that makes Doom 3: BFG so special is all of the extras that are packed in. The inclusion of the original Doom and Doom 2 was a nice touch. Although I have played both games over a dozen times each, it was still fun going back one more time and playing the first FPS series that I fell in love with. The games are obviously flawed when compared to games in the current generation but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be played.

Doom 3 BFG-11The best part about the additions of Doom and Doom 2 is the trophy support. Going through the games and collecting trophies made it even more fun especially for a trophy junkie like me. I hope that teens of the current generation take the time to play these classics and partake in some video game history. First Person Shooters weren’t always as glamorous as Battlefield or the newest Call of Duty. I won’t cover these games extensively here and maybe when I have some free time I’ll do a official condensed reviews on these titles.

Resurrection of Evil was originally a expansion pack that was released in 2005. The game takes place 2 years after Doom 3. You are a Marine sent in to recover a artifact that was discovered and brought back the forces from Hell. You will play through 12 new levels much in the same way as Doom 3. The format is the same, discovering story elements through your PDA, surviving scientists and emails.

Doom 3 BFG-13ROE introduces a new character named Dr. McNeil who has ties to the original game. You will locate her and learn key components of your mission. The expansion pack added two new weapons and six new enemies. The new weapons are the classic Double Barrel Shotgun and the Grabber. The Grabber comes in handy as it can be used to grab projectiles from enemies and fire back at them as well as grabbing items from hard to reach areas like health and armor.

The expansion pack takes about 5 hours to complete and is worth the time to play. It feels just like the original game and ties up some loose ends. As a solo purchase, I would recommend to wait for a discount however being bundled in with the BFG Edition, you can’t go wrong.
