X Review: Zartan

review-history01

There have been 20 previous incarnations of Zartan, starting in 1984 when he was first released with the Chameleon swamp skier. He has since been released single packed, two-packs, box sets, and even with the chameleon again(though a smaller version,) in the 25th Anniversary line.

review-background01

From the classic filecard:

Code Name: Zartan
File Name: Unknown
Aliases: Too numerous to list
Birthplace: Unknown

Zartan can alter his skin color at will to blend in with his environment. He is also a master of make-up and disguise, a ventriloquist, a linguist(over 20 languages and dialects,) an acrobatic-contortionist, and a practitioner of several mystic martial arts. Very little is known of his background and origins, but most security agencies agree that he must have had European military academy training(probablt at St. Cyr.)

Psychological Profile: Extreme paranoid schizophrenic. Grows into various multiple personalities to such an extent that the original personality becomes buried and forgotten.

From the Retaliation “filecard”:

ZARTAN carries out his sinister missions for COBRA COMMANDER. As the master of disguise, Zartan can impersonate anyone, but if you look closely into his eyes, you may see a tell-tale reddish glow that reveals his true identity.

As far as Retaliation failed attempts at filecards go, this one is better than most. It still doesn’t say enough, but it’s more detailed than “He travels over the city on his zip-line to attack his foes below!” Sheesh.
