Verdict

Looking at the series more than ten years later, it’s better than I remember it being (which isn’t saying much). I still think we’d have been better off leaving Wolverine’s origins unexplored, but it’s not an awful story – just one that wasn’t necessarily needed.

There’s a few misdirections (we’re led to believe that Dog Logan is going to turn out to be Wolverine, but no) and lots of possibly-too-clever establishing-of-backstory (interest in Japan, check; Logan name, check; Wolverine nickname, check) but it’s an okay read.
