X Review: Retaliation Budo

review-sculpt01

As you can see in the first image below, Budo and Bludgeon are both built on the Red Ninja framework, with new arms bearing the padded armor that really evokes the look of a samurai. The major differences come by way of the head, helmet, and the swords. Regardless, the layering effect is still very present and works well. With the robes on, it has an even greater effect.

I’ve seen complaints about his helmet not fitting right, that it won’t go all the way on. I’ve had no such troubles. It slips on and stays firmly in place, and his eyes are isible through the eyes of the mask, so I consider that a success. His headsculpt itself, however… Considering the pre-production photos, it could have been outstanding, but in reality it’s underwhelming. He looks sad, not intense. His mustache and beard are all out of place. It’s a real shame, because the pre-production head looked so good.

review-articulation01

Without the robe, articulation is okay. You still won’t get the posability out of him as you would an unadorned red ninja, but it works. Without the robes. Once the robes are on, he’s not much better than a brick.

You get all the articulation that we’ve come to expect, however. Head, shoulders, elbows, swivel-and-bend wrists(Yes, they are, even if some people seem to have trouble making them work or identifying them as such), torso, hips, double-knees, and rocker-ankles. If the armor was just a bit more pliable, he would be a lot more posable.
