X Review: Ultimate Cobra Commander

review-sculpt01

As stated at the beginning, this Commander was first spotted in the Hasbro Concept Case among a large number of concept zombies, and he was to be their leader. I know it was only a concept sculpt, but a good many people thought that it was pretty damned awesome. Not only that, but those same people started almost immediately stating that it would be the perfect update for the character that’s gotten fairly lackluster figures over the last few years. The best of the bunch was the POC Cobra Commander, and it still wasn’t the Cobra leader everyone wanted.

All the pleats and folds in his uniform are there. All the detail down to that half clutched hand, and you can just imagine him yelling at the GI Joes as his forces are beaten back in retreat. He’s still got a slight build, but far better proportions than the 25th versions, which you can see in the comparison image below.

Now, I know there’s a lot of people out there having problems with the Commander’s head. The socket is too tight for the neck joint and the head is almost fused into place. I hear you. I understand and can relate. But I also know that a good hot water bath or some time with a hair dryer will make your woes disappear. I know it works, you just have to show the patience to not turn the head before it’s ready to go, or you’re going to snap that ball joint.

Why they saw a need to give Cobra Commander rocker ankles, I’ll never know. I guess they were compensating for the 5 PoA POS Commander and the one with single knees and NO ankles in the first Retaliation waves. Overcompensated, by a long shot. He moves well, he poses well, but the rocker ankles are unnecessary.

Head, shoulders, elbows, swivel-and-bend wrists, torso, hips, double-knees, and rocker ankles. Everything your growing world conqueror needs!
