review-sculpt01

Data-Viper uses the same base sculpt as 3-Pack Airborne, which is obviously the same sculpt that we were shown when they first introduced this figure to us. Back when they told us it was just a pipe dream. They lied. Those horrible, wicked b–Oh, sorry. Anyway! It was a suitable sculpt for a HALO jumper, considering it -is- modeled after a high-altitude flight suit(look at the SR-71 pressure suit). It also works for this, though it’s certainly unclear why they’d use a pressure suit for this guy.

The non-helmeted head is pretty neat, though it seems to be lacking in some of the detail that was on the pre-production figure, which is often the case. The outer suit and all the accoutrements are decently detailed, even though it’s rather bulky and ungainly looking.

review-articulation01

Articulation is the same as Airborne. I have no complaints there. And without the outer suit, he moves fairly well, though the joints are a little loose. Nothing the super glue trick can’t fix. WITH the outer suit on, however, his ability to adapt good poses drops significantly. This is unfortunately due to the piece making him top and back heavy, and the loose joints can have him toppling over backwards without a LOT of finagling.

There’s also a lot of articulation found in the suit. The satellite dish and antenna can swivel and adjust, and the boxes on his shoulders can move up and down, left and right(to a point). They(Hasbro and others) call them rocket launchers with mini-rockets. I can see that I guess, but they look more like shoulder-mounted servers.

That said, for the figure, it’s all standard for the modern line. Head, shoulders, elbows, swivel-and-bend wrists, torso, hips, double-knees and basic ankles.
