Ages 25 and Up Rewind #2

First up is File #38 “Black Ops Part One”.  I remember my first impression was the serious tone.  The comics up to this point were all about the laughs and punch lines.  I was immediately intrigued.  I remember going back and re-reading it right away to soak it all in.  The story telling was different, it was chilling and I liked it.  My favorite lines are:

“That’s when everything went black.”

“I don’t remember anything after that. No images. No senses.”

“I tasted blood. I couldn’t see. I smelled smoke”.

“I couldn’t feel my legs. I heard someone screaming–“

Wow!  This wasn’t the typical Ages 25 and Up comic and I was hooked.  I couldn’t wait for Part Two.  Check out the Comic below:

A few things that I want to point out before we move on to Part Two.  Notice in the first panel Clutch talking to Lady Jaye with Flint throwing his hands up in the air.  First thing is of course Clutch is trying to get a piece of that action.  The next is I like to think that was an after thought.  I can picture Numbers doing this comic and at the last minute say, “I have to get Clutch in the strip somehow, let me work this in.”  Is that true?  We may never know.  I also think it would have been a fun contest to have the readers do a caption on what Clutch may have said to Lady Jaye.  I’m sure the responses would have been gold!

Next up is the character choice.  Remember this was 2009 and we didn’t have the wide variety of figures that we do now, especially for the Canada collector such as 1337W422102.  I believe using Dusty and Beachhead was the right move.  Both of the figures were great looking for the times and neither one of them were really considered “funny”.  A perfect selection for the first serious comic.
