Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes Review

When playing Ground Zeroes, the best tactic is to sneak through the mission. Crawling, crouching, throwing empty ammo clips to distract guards, grabbing guards from behind and giving them quick knife kills or just not killing them at all. You get a grade at the end of the mission and you are actually rewarded for having less kills. You can take the extreme approach of going guns blazing. Your health regenerates and you can use a healing spray if you’re badly hurt but whats the fun in that?

It’s very rewarding crawling through a drainage vent to one side of the camp, sneak past a guard and cut the power off to the camp. When a guard goes to investigate the power outage, you grab him from behind, interrogate him for information and then strangle him to death. You then must hide the body of course!

One of the best features is your binoculars. You can scout out the area, zooming in and out and marking objects and people. My first play through I didn’t utilize this enough however now I rely on it more than any gun or knife. You also have your radio to get information and a great map that updates with markers when you find info. Depending on the difficulty that you play, you will start with a weapon and of course you’ll find several more on your adventure.

Ground Zeroes has a very deep story despite the short main mission. You will get introduced to loads of information through the cinematic experiences, game play and additional findings like cassette tapes. The game takes place in 1974 and is after Peace Walker which is one of the few games in the series I haven’t played yet. I was a tad lost in my first play through but I was able to piece it together nicely. I’m not going to ruin the story but I will say to pay close attention to the ending. The ending is actually more like 6 endings as it just keeps going and going including a tease for the next game in the series.
