Comics: The Boys Vol. 1

Story

Billy Butcher discovers that the CIA is being tasked with monitoring superhero activity by the President, and uses that as an excuse to reform his team, “The Boys”. Hughie Campbell is first introduced to the superhero world when his girlfriend, who had just told him that she loved him, is brutally and accidentally killed by the superhero speedster A-Train. As the Boys are a man short (for reasons not yet revealed), Butcher recruits Hughie. He meets fellow members Mother’s Milk, the Frenchman and the Female.

The first mission of the newly-reformed Boys is to monitor the Teenage Kix, a superhero team. During their surveillance, Hughie finds out that all superpowers are derived from Compound V, a drug invented by the Nazis. Butcher injects Hughie with a Compound V derivative, without Hughie’s consent, which leads to Hughie leaving the team for a bit.

Teenage heroine Starlight (Annie January) has just been invited to join the Seven, the preeminent superhero group (of which A-Train is a member). An evangelical Christian and one of the few “innocent” (or possibly naïve) superheroes, she is shocked when she is told she has to perform oral sex on several of the male members of the Seven in order to join the group.

Hughie and Annie meet and briefly develop a relationship, after which Hughie rejoins the team. After Teenage Kix are humiliated when surveillance recordings are made public, they are told who is to blame: The Boys. In the ensuing fight, Hughie – unaware of how strong he really is – kills one of the superheroes.

Hughie, upset, is tempted to leave the Boys, but is ultimately convinced to stay.
