No one around me was really into sports too much growing up. Some extended family were into baseball, so I got roped into being a Dodgers fan, which was cool in 1988, not so much since then. Don't really go to games unless there is a group going. It's fun being there and drinking. It's not on TV here since I don't have Spectrum, so that's fine, it's boring to watch unless its the playoffs.

Basketball I liked in the 90's, though I also liked Gangsta Rap, sagging my pants, and trying to be a little shit thug.. so who knows. Since I outgrew that phase I also outgrew basketball. Unless the Lakers are in the playoffs, then I'll watch.

Hockey can be fun, again, in the playoffs if the Kings are there. Otherwise meh.

Football! FOOT BALL! It was interesting, but I'd only watch the Super Bowl most years. Not until Fantasy Football did I really get into it about 7-8 years ago. Now I'm all about it. Is it pointless? Sure. Is it fun? Yeah. There is a ton of minutiae to it.. I dunno, it's exciting, and the feeling when "your" team wins is very nice, even though you had zero.zero % to do with it.

It also gives you something to talk about with other guys, which is handy when you typically don't talk to strange men (Clearly Eddie has no need for this icebreaker, he goes full hog).

The ONLY time I did anything "official" was when I was very young. And even then, it wasn't by choice. T-ball and soccer. I think my mom was just trying to see if anything stuck. It did not. I hated it. My mom had to bribe me with toys. I remember getting a ROTJ Jabba's palace Lando after a game. What was the game? *shrugs*

I think there are two things at play with my disinterest in participating in sports besides my dad not being into them. I'm an introvert. I'm also a first born. That means I do not like to disappoint. I liked making people proud. Not being good (because of the first point) meant I was disappointing people that I didn't even want to be around. All of my good friends growing up not being into sports I think also played a role.

The only time I really enjoyed any kind of sport play was with kids (or family) that I was very comfortable with and when there really wasn't any serious pressure or competition. When it was just fun. When anyone gets too serious and angry, it suddenly becomes no fun. Heck, the reason I dislike most (all?) reality TV is because of the forced fights and anger. I just have no tolerance for it. It ruins a good time. But yeah, floor hockey was fun in school. Kickball or softball in the backyard with the neighborhood kids was cool. But I always preferred playing with figures, Hot Wheels, kick the can, "guns", building things, riding bikes, statues, anything before a team activity.

I did get into collecting sports cards (and the books dedicated to valuing the cards...Becket) at one point with my brother. It wasn't at all about the sport because we had no interest in watching sports. It was just about collecting which I have always been into. Collected rocks, pewter figures, action figures, 1:64th cars, 1:18th diecast, unique soda cans, Garbage Pail Kids, CDs, etc.

This is about the biggest drawback. I'm a very nice, easy going guy and I'm easy to get along with, but the vast majority of dudes are into sports and NOT into the things I am into. That plus being introverted makes conversing quite difficult. On the plus side, being an introvert, I just don't care. I actually prefer and am quite comfortable with just me and my very few close friends.

I try not to bag anyone who likes sports, the stuff I'm interested in isn't any better or worse.

I kinda wish I had been into sports, maybe I would have had less problems fitting in when I was growing up. I had a whole paragraph talking about that but deleted it...don't want the "Eeyore" label anymore.

Well, you know, all the kids in my neighborhood were sports crazy and would take any mistake on my part as some sort of personal slight. Took the fun right out of it. Then there were the ones that were, I don't know, hyper active? They took it as a chance to hurt others and loved doing it.

Yeah, other kids (and adults) taking any kind of sporting event WAY too seriously always ruined any potential fun. Relax! This isn't any of our careers!

I still stand by my assertion that if your father/family wasn't into sports, so too will you not be. My dad was not (at all) and my family on both sides never were. Sure, there'll be plenty of exceptions to the rule, but I bet you'll find that most dudes who are fanatically into a particular sport had a father who was also into it.

Wrong, I watched a kick returner hurdle a kicker this weekend. That was a new feat for my eyes.

I make a conscience effort not to, but it's almost impossible to not let it slip. So deeply attached to my Chiefs. They represent KC on the national stage, I live in KC and I pay taxes so they keep their home in KC. We isn't so bad when viewed this way.

Guilty, right here. When I talk about UT Football, it's always "we". When the whole region lives and breathes the same team, it's easier to use the inclusive pronoun than anything else. But to be fair, the discussions taking place are usually with other fans of the same team, because geography, so you're including them too. It's not that you're pretending to be part of the team or trying to sound cool or important. When you're talking with other like-minded fans, you're all in the same collective "we" boat.

I understand that the optics might be different when viewed from an outside source geographically or by fans of other teams. But quite frankly, my sports conversations with outsiders regarding Tennessee football are so infrequent and limited, it's not worth altering my vernacular.

I'm wholly unapologetic.

So U2 had a seamless 50' by 50yd 8k screen for their stage backdrop. No biggie.

That width is spectacular. Imagine movies filmed to fit that. I think about the only movies that could take advantage would be 70mm...?

My radio dj friend said they have 3 of the full stage frames so they can build one while playing on one and tear the other down, but they only have one of the screens. I need to research how they made the damn screen to begin with. The daylight pic you see it looks like a giant piece of cardboard. It can't be a couple rear projectors simply for the fact that the support beams would block them. I could make out individual pixels with the binoculars that looked about the same as walking right up to your 4K tv. It's really astounding and I need one for game day in the garage.

Edit:

Quote:
The concert's visual centerpiece — an 8,000-square-foot, 7.6K resoution video screen — was beginning to be assembled at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Evans said the screen goes up in the span of five hours and comes down in three.

More than 1,000 video panels, painted in silver and gold to mimic "Joshua Tree" album artwork, make up the screen that stretches 200 feet wide and 40 feet high.

I've run into a bit of an issue when it comes to sports. I love NFL football, but I've pulled a 180 and can't stand college football. It's like watching humorless Globetrotters. One team is expected to win by 35. If they only win by 14, they failed. How can you enjoy that? How can you enjoy a season where there's only about 3-4 competitive games for a team? How can you enjoy it when you know half the team is getting a free education and can barely read or write? Then the rapings. Then the pedophilia. All of course aren't as serious as a player selling his own stuff for money.

I didn't want to go that way, but I did. So here's the issue. While I've fallen out of love with college football, my family has doubled down. And it's become their goal in life to force feed me recruiting stats and other BS until I love it again. I've resigned myself to pretend I still like it to get them to leave me alone.

Professional football, college basket ball. Everything else can suck it unless the local team is making a championship run.

GB, I understand the dilemma of college ball. However, name a sport that doesn't have some degree of dark underbelly. There are negative aspects to every sport, every organized hobby. Bottom line, if there are people involved, there's going to be some bad apples that give the sport a black eye.

I think you exaggerate about the number of non-competitive games though. I'll speak about UT because that's what I know. They (we!) play 12 games a year, 8 conference games in the SEC (where even the worst teams put up a hell of a fight) & one "power five" non-conference game. That only leaves three possible patsy teams, usually reserved for early in the season and homecoming. Yeah, Alabama blows out most opponents, but they're the exception, not the rule.

And I think it's somewhat hypocritical to point out college ball's failings while turning a blind eye to the myriad of sordid scandals, underhand dealings, and general disregard for players, their health, and their well-being in the NFL. Whatever is wrong with college sports is just magnified on the professional level.

I'm not trying to convince you to love the NCAA, but I just don't see them as any worse than other organizations. However, the good news is that the power-five have been toying with the idea of breaking off into their own division, outlawing games against Division-IAA schools, etc. The power-five are slowly wresting control over the upper echelon of the sport from the NCAA. And while I'm certain it's bottom-line driven, I'm not convinced that the end result won't be a better system.

And if you don't think people care about what happens on campuses, look again. Penn State has scant few people left from that era (which btw, wasn't remotely the fault of a single player), Baylor's assault scandal cost the coaching staff and the school, and now they have a shell of a program that couldn't beat a high-school team. Even the schools that are being run by the SJW crowd like Missouri are paying the price, with donations to the athletic dept going down 68.7% in '16.

Sure, college football is not about scholar athletes and is more of a minor league feeder system to the NFL. But that's also not new. However when you see that 18 year old kid boot the winning FG or toss the hail mary pass, and everyone rushes the field, and you see the genuine raw emotion in the faces of the players and fans... it's hard to deny that there is still something special and pure about it, even in the face of it's obvious faults.

Clearly YMMV.

Bottom line. Players in the NFL at least get paid. And the SEC is the exception to the rule.
but as I said, I didn't want to get into that. It's personal views developed over 30 years of watching teams get screwed over. I think Joe Pa did me in. I just wanted to share a connection to the non sport lovers I now have in this one instance.

Yeah, I'm no hardcore fan of much of anything, so the first whiff I get of douchebaggery (or worse) immediately turns me off to that player/coach/team and sometimes even sport. Last time I had an emotional investment in a team was the last time I saw a team that was at least mostly staffed by what were generally considered classy individuals. That has been years ago now. Now, when I do watch, I find myself rooting against teams more often than for them.

I haven't been able to stomach any NBA for well over a decade and stopped enjoying the NFL when every tackle, pass reception and 5 yard run started to become followed by an end zone worthy celebration, ugh. Baseball is just too boring and I've even gotten seriously meh on the NHL of late as well. And I can't remember the last time I watched any college sports. I am certain it was pre-JoePa/Sandusky scandal though.

I kinda enjoy the Olympics though!

I see both sides. I really love the sports that appeal to me, and I have nothing but complete apathy towards the rest.

Except the olympics. I fucking hate the olympics (sorry Dan). Talk about scandals, corruption, cheating, and overall douchbaggery. Plus, it consumes all news, media, primetime tv, and conversations for weeks at a time. You can't escape it. If you don't like NASCAR, don't watch NASCAR. If you don't like the olympics, tough shit because it's going to be force-fed to you through every pore of your face. And unlike other sports, it's not ok to dislike the olympics. You're suddenly unamerican if you don't give a shit about dancing 13 year old acrobats and bobsledding.

Fuck the olympics.

Ha! I suppose that's true. There are always some jackwagons creating drama there too (at least the drama usually ends when their particular sport does). I suppose I just focus on the athletes/sports I enjoy watching, since there are a hundred of them. I don't watch much of the reporting/stories surrounding the games either, just the individual matches. I like stuff like the beach volleyball, swimming, running (Usain Bolt, FTW!), gymnastics (fall down!) and such in the summer and the hockey, skiing, skating (fall down!) and bobsledding in the winter.

All that ^^ does to someone who just doesn't like sports is make them LOATH sports. There are countless channels dedicated to the nonsense but yet all shows halt for weeks or months at a time to make way for an all almighty sporting event?? Every commercial and every promo is centered around sports. You go to your favorite non-sports bar restaurant and they are playing that garbage too?? Every conversation you over hear or are part of gets hijacked by sports talk?? It's like they are trying to distract us from, something.

And people wonder why I hate being around people.
