The way he's played the last couple of years (injured & slow), it's the right call. I never liked him or his team (or his ridiculous hair), but I respect what he was able to accomplish.

Yeah better to retire than switch teams and have one last, super subpar season (*cough* MJD *cough*)

All those concussions over his career would have me fucking terrified of CTE.

Seems like LBs and Strong Safeties are most prone to CTE. At least those appear to be the high-profile cases we've seen the past few years.

At this point with all we've learned, as much as I love football, I doubt I'd let my son play.

Wow, they actually slapped New England's pecker. Brady gets to ride the pine for the first four weeks of the season, they lose their first round pick for the 2016 Draft and their fourth round pick in 2017, plus a million dollar fine for the team.

I was hoping for something more in the 6-8 range. But I can live with 4 as long as they don't let him appeal it down.

I just fundamentally don't understand why that particular franchise thinks it's above the rules. And it's double confounding when you realize that they likely don't need to cheat to be a consistent contender.

That bothers me as well. If you're a team that has been consistently at the bottom of the table for years I get why you'd do dishonest shit, but a team that everyone knows is a safe bet to see post season play?

Politicians in D.C. think they can do whatever they want, why not the Patriots?

I heard they expect his game ban to be appealed away.. lame.

I think most of all this will tarnish Tom Terrific's legacy. Like Barry Bonds etc. Obviously he's talented, and at least he wasn't doping himself.. but still.. once a cheater always a cheater.

I don't think it's a big deal but it's a rule. They broke the rule. I'm seeing a lot of people that I respect making asses of themselves to show solidarity. From the changing of profile photos of Brady's 12 to protesting at the NFL offices.

When the tat5 hit OSU, I may have thought they embellished it as cheating on the field. I may have thought it's a stupid rule. But it's a rule. And OSU's players broke it. I didn't march on the NCAA. I was too embarrassed as a fan.

My respect for the NFL will vanish is they let him appeal away the suspension. Plus, if the Pats successfully sue the NFL, which they have zero leg to stand on, as rulings by the commish are final for the 32 franchises, then it's basically a sign that the Pats are now and in the future exempt from all discipline.

This whole thing is not a court of law. There doesn't need to be evidence beyond a shadow of a doubt like a criminal trial. The NFL regularly suspends players accused of real crimes long before they are tried and found guilty (or not). If the NFL thinks there is a "preponderance of evidence" (also sufficient to win a civil suit IRL), then the Pats and Brady should have zero standing at an appeal or lawsuit. They don't have to have video evidence of Brady telling the equipment guy to put 10.375 psi in the balls. Yet I bet he suits up in September. Such a crock.

Brady's suspension, I think, has to do with the lack of cooperation. The NFL would have rolled over until someone treated them like a push over.

Yeah, but when it goes to a judge, "lack of cooperation" seems like a non-issue. That only matters to the NFL, but when you get into a real-world situation, nobody that's accused ever "cooperates" with the people trying to nail them. It's this weird dichotomy between NFL rules/expectations and real-world rules that always seems to help the accused when these cases go beyond the commissioner.

I was glad to see the Pats not appeal, but even that reeks of "Hey don't rock the boat".

Anyway, lets see what that Garapopololopollopoolo guy can do.

Yeah, that just meant that the Club won't appeal. Brady is still going to fight it hard.

I'll be blown away if Goodell grows a spine and upholds the 4-game benching. It's the new MO to give out harsh punishments and then cut them in half upon appeal, regardless of whether or not there is actually any merit in the appeal. This will all be forgotten when the pats are 6-2 in early Nov.

This is complete theory with little support but I wonder if this is possible.

Last year, Gordon failed a drug test and it a hell of a long time for the league to officially rule on it. There was speculation that Gordon's attorneys were threatening to sue the league using a tactic these other players used. Essentially, states have standards for drug testing and the league levels for violation was way lower than the state levels. The players filed a suit. What happened is the case took over a year to play out. By law, any suspension was delayed until there was a ruling.

I kind of wonder if this suspension is fuzzy enough to warrant a lawsuit in Massachusetts, thus being log jammed until next year, allowing Brady to have a last run before retiring.

Maybe? Seems plausible.. I can't see him wanting to go out with this scandal being his last thing though.

Nah, I think at this point, Brady is driven by breaking the Joe Montana tie. Ignoring the fact that Brady isn't fit to carry Cool Joe's jock, I'm sure Tommy wants to get one for the thumb.

What do you offer a one-handed man that used to be productive? They're smart to hold back, and he is too. They all just need for him to rehab and see where he lands. But he's got a new DC, and it's not an easy scheme to learn, so I suspect he'll be missing significant time in the regular season.

Question is, do they punish him by withholding game checks (and they can) since his injury wasn't football related? Seems appropriate, but it might sour the relationship. I guess it depends on whether or not they really want to keep him around.

They ought to withhold them on the grounds that he's a fucking idiot. Have you happened to hear what the recovery timeline might be? With healing and rehab I'd be shocked if he came back before mid-season. At the earliest.

They think he's in the ~8 week window for recovery (missing 2-3 games), but then missing camp with a new defensive scheme means he likely won't see meaningful playing time until mid-season.

And he also has to learn to play sans index-finger, in a position that relies on manhandling other large men, possibly a non-trivial adaptation.
