Crimson Neo-Viper – “Cobra Royal Guard”

Oh boy.

For better or worse, the Crimson Neo-Viper comes with a lot of accessories. Normally this would be a wonderful thing, but for the life of me I can’t figure out some of the inclusion choices made for this figures accessories.

First off, the figure comes with his red armored removable vest. Bulky and shiny, it looks as if it would do its job well, and it is somewhat imposing when on the figure.

Next we have the weapons, a light gray machine gun with bayonet. This is a bullpup designed rifle, with the magazine behind the trigger, which makes holding it a bit tricky for the figure. He also comes with a light gray pistol, two light gray axes, a light gray poleaxe (yep..), and finally a light gray machete/knife thing. All the weapons are made in the same light gray color, which is not very visually appealing, and does not show off much detail.

Finally, the Crimson Neo-Viper comes with a clear plastic box… with a small plastic snake inside. There is an opening on one end, and a removable top on the other.

I remember reading something about the Rise of Cobra movie, where Cobra Commander uses the snakes as a test or.. something, so I assume this box o’ snakes will make more sense once the movie is out.

For now, we’re being attacked by snakes, by SNAKES!

crimsonneo-viper03The Crimson Neo-Viper comes in the standard Rise of Cobra packaging, with artwork on the left side of the package and the figure placed on the right. The front features nice artwork for the Crimson Neo-Viper, while the back of the package has his “file card” with minor details about the character.

The design of the packaging makes it almost impossible to get the figure out of the box without destroying the packaging and artwork. Great care must be taken (and use of a knife is recommended) if you want to save the artwork and the full card back.

  1. I was going through the gi joe figures with my son this evening and i got to looking at this figure close up. I never paid it much attention when he first bought them. After i looked at it comparatively with the original neo-viper i liked this version much better.

Some simple thing they did to spruce this version up was actually paint the shoulder pauldrons. The original neo-viper’s were plain black like the rest of the sleeve. The cobra logo was also tampo printed on the side of the shoulder pauldron rather than on the front of the sleeve. For some reason Hasbro gets a hard one from printing the insignias on the front of the arms rather than the sides of the arm like they would be in real life.

The red is just awesome. On this figure. Not a color or style i would choose if this figure were based on real life, but the red metalized look is just incredible.
