Black Ops Review

Everybody knows why COD is so popular,  it’s the multiplayer!  There is no greater video game experience then playing online shooting your friends,  co workers,  classmates and/or strangers.  However I’m going to start with Campaign which doesn’t get the respect it should.  Now a days,  everybody just wants to shoot each other online.  I actually have several friends who logged in over 2,000 hours in Black Ops and have never even started a single player campaign.  Gamers these days are spoiled and don’t respect tradition.  Reading over the previous line,  I sound like a bitter old fart :).

You start the game as Alex Mason strapped to a chair unaware of what’s going on,  being interrogated by an unknown organization.  As your being bombarded by questions,  you start your first mission of the game.  Right from the start you get a feeling that your experiencing a thrilling campaign.  The first mission is a flashback in 1961 during the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba.  Your mission is to assassinate Fidel Castro.  The mission is a success,  however your in for twist.  It turns out you killed a body double and Mason is captured by the real Castro and you get handed over to the Russians.  I don’t want to spoil the entire campaign in case you haven’t played it yet.  Alex Mason is the main character you will control,  mostly through flashbacks as he is being interrogated and reliving his memory’s.  These flashbacks will take place during 1961-1968.  You will also play as secondary characters like CIA agent Jason Hudson.  Along the way Mason meets Robert McNamara and President John F. Kennedy who authorizes an assassination on a  Russian Protagonist.  The game is called Black Ops for a reason.  Your missions are classified assaults filled with mystery,  assassinations and sabotage.

You will experience several plot twists during the campaign.  Without spoiling everything,  your main objective is to prevent a chemical attack dubbed “Nova 6” on American soil by the Russians.  During the 6-8 hour campaign you will re live a tour in the Vorkuta Gulag,  attack and stop a Russian Space Station,  participate in the Tet Offensive and infiltrate a Russian Submarine.  My favorite mission was during the Battle of Khe Sanh.  I mentioned some of the main characters already but what separates this COD from the rest is the outstanding supporting cast.  My favorite is a non playable character who runs with Mason named Sgt Frank Woods.  You will also recognize some all star voice actors in Black Ops.  You don’t get the usual video game voice actors this time around.  You get some big name celebrities like Sam Worthington,  Ice Cube,  Gary Oldman and Ed Harris.
