MAG Review

MAG offers 4 play modes and a very basic Training Mode that teaches you the fundamental controls.  The training mode is a disappointment.  In training mode you are taught some of the button commands however not all of them including how to operate vehicles.  This normally wouldn’t be an issue for me as I will normally play the campaign mode before I jump online and that’s how I learn how to play the game.  With MAG being online only,  this is the start of my frustration.

The first game mode to try is Suppression.  This mode is a 64 player match that is essentially the basic “Team Deathmatch“.  Your goal is simple,  eliminate the other 32 player team.  In this mode you will gain experience from kills only.

The next game mode is called Sabotage.  This mode is also 32 players to a side.  Your goal is to control objectives A and B long enough to unlock C.  Once C is unlocked you need to plant an explosive charge on it and defend it until it blows up.  This mode has a 20 minute timer.  If time runs out before C is destroyed,  the defending team automatically wins.

In Sabotage it’s much easier to level up.  You gain experience for kills,  completing objectives,  destroying vehicles,  healing and reviving allies and repairing and destroying turrets etc.

As you continue your goal to reach level 70,  game modes like Sabotage really help.  It felt like I leveled up quicker when I played a more supporting role like a Medic.  In MAG,  you will die often and having Medic’s on your squad really helps especially with the 20 second spawn wait which feels like an eternity.

Before I get to the other game modes I want to explain the leadership abilities in the game.  Once you reach level 15,  you can accept a leadership role in your faction.  When players stick with their leader they get increased experience,  faster reload times and damage resistance among other abilities.

In Suppression and Sabotage each PMC can have 4 squad leaders and 1 platoon leader.  Leaders can also call in special attacks like air strikes and unique spawn abilities.  I recommend staying close to your Leaders during battle.
