MAG Review

MAG is a really cool concept and made by a developer with a great track record.  Unfortunately it fails to deliver.  If I had to describe MAG in one word it would be frustration.  The game has so many faults.

The first frustration is the lack of content.  No campaign mode,  limited training mode,  only 4 online modes without adding DLC and the lack of interest to continue to level up.  The only perk to leveling up is the ability to switch factions.  You would also think that with a game being online only,  they would have more maps to play.  You only have 15 maps and 6 of them are DLC ones.

My biggest complaint is the lack of fun.  You spent the majority of your match either dead or running.  You will get sick of looking at  the death and spawn screens.  The revival helps however with so many players on the map,  it’s very common to get revived and just as you get up,  you get smoked again.

Another inexcusable complaint is the lack of identification between different factions.  You have a small blue or red triangle about each character.  This triangle is often hard to identify and doesn’t pop up until it’s too late.

The triangle’s wouldn’t be such an issue if the game didn’t allow friendly fire.  I killed and was eliminated by my own faction members as much as the opposition. After awhile you become trigger shy and start getting owned because of that.  Again,  very frustrating.

The graphics are good even though you will rarely have time to appreciate them.  You will be so busy trying to figure out what’s going on the battlefield and dying that you won’t even notice.  The music and sound effects are good.

I’m not a fan of the control scheme.  A FPS needs to have flawless controls to be fun and addicting.  MAG’s controls are just another notch on the key word of this review.  Frustration.

Overall,  this Playstation 3 exclusive is a cool concept that just has too many negatives.  Once you get past the thrilling 256 player online mode.  You will find a frustrating game that lacks content,  fun and longevity.  MAG gets a 5 out 10.
