Medal of Honor: Frontline Review

The highlight of the game was the story telling.  You really feel part of the war and the need of urgency with each objective.  The story is shorter than I would have liked,  you can complete it in about 10 hours.  A new addition to the HD remake was Trophies.  I enjoy collecting Trophies and it added to the replay value.

The missions give you a wide variety of game play which is very impressive for such an old game.  The levels have you all over Europe,  fighting Nazis on a train,  battling in the countryside,  inside bunkers, using stealth tactics in a German uniform and even riding in a mine cart among other things.

My favorite mission was the first one.  Your storming the beach of Normandy during D-Day.  The beginning of the level is very cinematic as your riding in your boat while your getting pummeled with artillery.  Eventually your boat is destroyed and you need to swim for the beach.  As you reach the beach,  your Commanding Officer is barking orders at you as you must rescue other soldiers and help capture the beach.

Playing this 10+ year old game,  I noticed several things that I had forgotten and taken advantage of during the current generation of games.  The first thing that jumped out at me was the poor graphics.  Don’t get me wrong,  they look good being re-mastered in HD and for such an old game.  It just took me some time to get used to it.  Once I adjusted to the graphics,  I started to appreciate the details.

The uniforms look fantastic and stand out very well.  I’m not a WW2 buff or anything so I have no idea if they are accurate but they sure look like they are.  I also noticed the facial expressions on the soldiers.  During cut scenes you can actually see their lips moving in perfect sequence,  a rare addition in a game from 2002.  Frontline has excellent animations as well,  including several death animations.  When you shoot a Nazi in the head,  he grabs his head as he’s slumping to his death.
