The X Reviews: Cobra Invasion Team Firefly

Overall

I’d like to give a brief editorial at the end of this review, before I go into grading and my reasons for it. The reason? Hasbro, and arbitrarily decided this figure or that figure is now called “Ultimate”. This Firefly, which shares so much in common with ARAH, the cartoon, the comics, 25th anniversary, etc. This, is what one would consider an “Ultimate” version. High accessory count, easily identifiable, excellent sculpt, and options. POC wave 3 Snake Eyes is “Ultimate”, for the same reasons. With a better head, Renegades Stormshadow is, as well. But Firefly-in-green-with-a-HISS-drone? Ultimate? Hardly.

Let me also add that we, the fans, came up with this distinction, Hasbro. You’d like to just assign it wherever you like, but the word does not suddenly make the figure that much better. Why don’t you just let us decide what figure we feel is Ultimate, and you can quit trying to determine it for us.

The Retaliation line has two other versions of Firefly, and we know those are pretty much specific to the movie. Their so-called ‘Ultimate Firefly’, and Day-glo Go-cart Firefly? Definitively movie Firefly. This one, however, is most definitely an ARAH homage. It harkens back to the 80’s, and really brings Firefly into the modern age. This one doesn’t fit in this line, and might as well be in 30th packaging. I’m certain I’m not the only one who feels that making THIS Firefly part of a 3-pack is some sort of injustice, and I’m hoping somewhere down the line they bring it back as a carded single release.

Firefly has great articulation, excellent and subtle paint apps, and despite the dullness of some accessories, it’s great that he comes with an assortment befitting a saboteur. The only real downer is that there’s no figure stand, and he comes in a 3 pack with a pair of repaints.

My grade? A solid A, for excellence in everything we expect Firefly to be and more.
