Comics: Iron Man – The Armor Wars

Story

Tony Stark discovers that Force (who he fought and defeated in issues not reprinted here) is using armor based on designs stolen from Stark. With the help of Ant-Man, he discovers that Spymaster sold his designs to Justin Hammer. Tony then plans on taking out every armored character whose designs might be based on his own tech. This brings him into conflict not only with foes like the Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo, but with other armored and non-armored heroes (such as Steve Rogers and the West Coast Avengers).

A series of conflicts follows, including ones where Iron Man fights the hero Stingray and it turns out his armor isn’t based on Stark’s designs, Iron Man is forced to fight the Captain (Steve Rogers’ costumed identity at the time), and the Titanium Man is killed in battle with Iron Man in Russia. As a result, the West Coast Avengers revoke Iron Man’s membership and he is wanted by the U.S. government.

The Armor Wars took place back in the day when Tony Stark’s identity as Iron Man was not public knowledge, and most people (including several of his teammates on the Avengers) thought Iron Man was a hired bodyguard for Tony Stark. This comes into play at the conclusion of the story, where Iron Man “dies” and a new Iron Man shows up.

The story has an abundance of 3rd person captions and thought balloons, which were common at the time but have mostly disappeared from modern comics.
