Comics: Enemy of the State

Story

Lured to Japan under the guise of helping an old friend, Wolverine gets kidnapped by a mix of the Hand, HYDRA and a group of mutants. They kill him, resurrect and brainwash him – yes, Wolverine gets brainwashed AGAIN – which is the Hand’s standard operating procedure for people it wants. They send Wolverine out to kill as many super-heroes and villains as he can, so that they can resurrect and brainwash them as well. Recruitment drive!

The big antagonist of the piece is Gorgon, a mutant whose stare turns people to stone and whose reflexes and fighting abilities are on par or above those of fighters like Wolverine or Elektra.

Wolverine is eventually captured and cured of this week’s brainwashing, and he has to fight people he’s killed (like Northstar and Elektra).

Wolverine eventually triumphs with the help of Elektra, who is able to shake off the Hand’s programming on her own. He defeats Gorgon (who nevertheless shows up later on in other titles – surprise surprise) and stops the combined threat.

The last issue reprinted here is a big departure from the rest – it’s a tale of Logan during WWII in a Nazi concentration camp. All of the dialogue in the issue comes from the Germans; Logan doesn’t say a word.
