The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Review

Before I go into the review I should say I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings Trilogy when I saw them. Did I love them, no, but only because they were so drawn out. The first two movies suffered from extremely bad ending spots and they tried to make up for it in Return of the King by giving us a half hour worth of endings. I warn you, this new trilogy suffers from the same horrible black screen endings as the first trilogy.

I really liked when Randal in Clerks 2 (Jeff Anderson) broke down the LotR trilogy by basically saying it was nothing but walking. Well, they fixed that slow point from the first trilogy by making them run this time around.

Once again this movie is very drawn out. I am not saying I didn’t enjoy it, but I will most likely skip a lot of scenes when watching it again. Just like I do with the other movies in this series. The action scenes and environments are very worthy of the series and are top notch, as they were with all the other movies.

Now let’s get to Smaug himself. Wow, he was spectacular. Every single scene that he is in is great. They spent a lot of time creating this Dragon and it shows in the final product. Smaug alone makes this a must watch movie if you are a fan of anything mythical.

An Orc named Azog now leads the Orc army. They give us a back story for him and he is an excellent foe. He is gruesome looking, very violent, and very determined in his quest given to him by a Necromancer. A Necromancer is revealed as the new ultimate villain in this movie. We all know who he is or will be.

I do not want to give away many spoilers. I knew nothing of any of the movies going into them because I never read any of the books. I think this really added to my experience and don’t want to ruin the reader’s experience either.

I will give this movie 8 out of 10 stars. The ending and slow points lowered it’s rating.
