REVIEW: Aliens Colonial Marines Xenomorph Lurker

The Xenomorph Lurker is a silent, quick, and powerful Xenomorph. It has camouflage capabilities and a lethal pounce ability, perfect for surprise attacks. However, it doesn’t have the defenses of the other Xenos, meaning it can be easily killed. It’s best used for stealth or flanking while the Xeno Soldier distracts the Marines. It is based on Ridley Scott’s design for the Alien.  Hiya toys [1] has brought to life this exciting line in our favorite scale!

review-history01
Aliens: Colonial Marines is a first-person shooter video game developed by Gearbox Software and published by Sega. The game is set in the Alien universe and takes place after the events of the third film in the franchise, Alien 3 (1992). The game is the third Aliens title that Sega has produced: the first was Aliens vs. Predator in 2010, and the second was Aliens Infestation in 2011. The game was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 video game consoles and for Microsoft Windows on February 12, 2013.

review-sculpt01
The sculpt on this figure is amazing for the size of the figure.  Hiya toys really managed to pack as much detail into a 4″ figure as possible.  The impressive part is that this was done on smaller limbs too.  We have seen on other lines where detail is something that can be missed as the diameter of the appendages gets smaller but this figure manages to defy that logic.  From top to bottom they did not miss much.  All the way down to the tail.  The head even has the clear top.  The accessories have excellent sculpts too and do not miss many details.  You can even see the bottom of the facehugger.  The plastic is a bit softer than most figures that I am used to but with the limbs like they are I would imagine options were limited.

review-articulation01
As you might imagine, with the smaller limbs does come some limited articulation.  The legs have ball joints that do restrict it in certain crouching positions but the feet do have a hinge to allow it forward and back motions.  It of course has a single knee.  The arms move as well as any other line even with the thinner limbs.  There is also a hinge at the elbow.  The head can go almost all the way to the shoulder and looks down easily.  It has limited up motion with the back of it going so far that it hits the spines a bit.  The hands only turn but can be swapped out for different poses.  At the end of the day you do have to give up a little articulation in order to create an accurate figure for this subject but they did a really good job with it.  The Lurker tends to lean back with the weight of the tail and spines.  Posing can be a little bit of a pain if you want it displayed straight up.  It is best put in an action scene where it can use an item as a crutch.

review-paint01
The paint of these is really good.  It really only has a few dark colors but with some of the smaller details they managed to not have too much bleeding over to other areas.  Considering the sculpt this is pretty good. We have seen quality control issues with many other lines but the figure that I got was done well.  You can even tell the different details in the body sculpt with the paint applications.

review-accessories01
Another area this line shines is with the accessories.  The figure comes with an egg [19], a facehugger [20], extra hands for different poses and a stand.  The egg has excellent detail as does the facehugger.  Pretty impressive what they tooled in order to get so much on such a small subject.  Of course multiples are needed in order to properly set up an attack on the Colonial Marines.  The facehugger is pretty much on point scale wise as it would be in the movies.  The hands have small pegs to caution would be suggested when removing and switching them out.  The pegs seem to be sturdy but because of the size switching them out constantly may not be the best idea.

review-package01
The package lets you see everything that you are getting with the figure which I like.  There are no surprises inside and if these were in brick and mortar stores you could tell right away if tampering was done.  The sides have some artwork and the back shows the figure displayed nicely.  They did a good job branding it as you can see the Colonial Marines title all over.  An interesting thing is that it suggests this for ages 14+ so it puts it right around the age where people may be getting into the game.  Plus, there are some smaller parts that could get lost easier with smaller children but I am guessing these will be bought by more adult collectors than anyone.

Sculpt Articulation Paint Accessories Package Overall
A+ B+ A+ A B+ A-

Overall is not an average.

I give the figure a solid A-.  Hiya Toys really did a good job with the sculpt and execution of the Alien brand.  If the leg articulation was a bit better I could have graded a little higher but the lack of a good crawling crouch kind of hurts.  Not a deal breaker but does limit some of the classic posing that would be nice to have.  The packaging is nothing too fancy but it does the job well showing what you are getting and branding.
