The Fighting 1:18th exists for our readers. We are growing by leaps and bounds because of them. In order to meet the increasing demand for new content The Fighting 1:18th is looking to expand our magazine offerings. To facilitate this we and are looking for unique and interesting contributors. We want to give 1:18 collectors, both new and old, an avenue to research, discuss, and become knowledgeable about their next purchase, whether it be their first or their tenth. To fulfill this goal we want to deliver breaking news from the industry, write in depth and objective reviews, and provide discussion and inspiration for our readers and members.
What Are We Looking For?
First, we’ll probably need a small disclaimer. We are a small, online magazine so if you are a potential enlistee you should understand all the hazards that come with writing for a magazine… and being involved in this site.
To begin, the applicant should have a basic grasp of grammar and spelling. This means you can’t rely exclusively on Microsoft Word’s spell check function, although it does give a good reference. If you don’t know the difference between weather and whether, there, their, and they’re, you probably shouldn’t apply.
Most importantly, to define hazards of writing, you should be able to understand peer review and be able to take constructive criticism in stride. If you are a writer, or are serious about contributing as a writer, understanding these concepts is essential. When you submit an article for publishing it will be reviewed with a fine tooth comb by one of our editors before going live. This is ensure quality and primarily, uniformity to our presentation standards. If there are issues with anything, including formatting, the article will be returned and the revisions must be made in a timely manner without taking the criticism personally. If you understand that this process isn’t personal, even if the article is torn apart, it goes a long way towards your growth as a writer. This process will also push your writing further than you ever thought possible.
Since the magazine is online only, it goes without saying that you will need regular computer and internet access. It would be preferred if you had access to a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, or Google Docs. You must also be able to maintain regular communication with the editors and administrators of the site through E-mail, instant messenger, and in the discussion forums.
Lastly, Any enlistee must be someone with character, integrity, and a sense of humor (internet tough guys need not apply). In The Fighting 1:18th these are the most important skills you can posses. If you can’t roll with the punches you won’t last long here. If you can hold your own and be open to constructive criticism, you will find one of the most rewarding community experiences on the internet.
The Fighting 1:18th is looking to enlist someone who is passionate about finding 1:18 scale related news. The writer who applies will be someone who can scour the internet for any news regarding 1:18 scale products and industry news from JS International, Merit, Hasbro, Unimax, Blue Box Toys etc. Any information the writer deems newsworthy.
In addition to finding the news, the writer is also responsible for posting this news to our front page located at www.fighting118th.com. The news writer must gather up relevant information and images in order to post a one paragraph to one page news story in their own words. The writer is also expected to maintain their news stories by managing and responding to relevant comments, posting corrections and updates, answering reader e-mails, and also participating in our site forum. The writer must also be able to work within a word processor and become comfortable in the WordPress publishing system (full walk-through, tutorials, and support are provided by our staff).
As a news writer there is no regular contribution expectation, as the candidate is simply required to post news as it is found across the internet. Other avenues of information include signing up for press release information from the major industry members, and scouting forums to keep your fingers on the pulse of the collecting community as a whole.
The Fighting 1:18th wants to enlist a master customizer who is beyond passionate about creating breathtaking customs and sharing those tips and techniques with a readership of thousands of 1:18 scale collectors and enthusiasts from greenhorns to veterans. The Fighting 1:18th wants to become a destination for 1:18 scale figure and vehicle customizers for inspiration, direction, and discussion. This columnist position will spearhead these efforts and hopefully grow this section of the site to incredible proportions. The enlistee must be ready to tackle this awesome responsibility.
The customizer will be required to provide a weekly column to discuss any aspect of customizing they see fit. These columns can be opinion pieces, discussion about a various topic, or fielding questions from the readership. The pieces would need to be at least one page long with pictures of the subject(s) being discussed. We would also like to get a tutorial archive set up in which the customizer may write any tutorial he desires. These tutorials would count towards the weekly article submission, but more involvement is never frowned upon. The customizer would need to provide a detailed, step by step tutorial, and numerous, well lit pictures of each step involved. These columns and tutorials will be posted to our front page located at www.fighting118th.com.
The customizer must be able to work within a word processor and become comfortable in the WordPress publishing system (full walk-through, tutorials, and support are provided by our staff).
Additional responsibilities include: maintaining any news stories, columns, and tutorials by managing and responding to relevant comments, posting corrections and updates, answering reader e-mails, and also participating in our site forum.
This position is going to become integral to the success of this site and there is a lot of creative freedom here. When you submit your interest to fill this position, please explain some of the ideas you may have. The selected enlistee will meet with the admins to discuss the directions all parties want to see the customs section go. We are completely open to any suggestions you may have.
