Multicam was only an in-theater stop gap, and Scorpion is ridiculously similar to Multicam.

It was developed at the same time as Multicam.

If you want to really be pissed off as a taxpayer, consider Crye Precision wanted 25 million for Multicam, and the Army scoffed, but how much did they end up pissing away on UCP and this new round of procurement?

That's right, this was all in the name of "economic stimulus". ;)

While $25M may have been a fair price for ownership of the Multicam copyright, the Army could have continued to use Multicam without any additional cost. $25M is more that twice what all the services spent on developing all the patterns since MARPAT was released. The Army couldn't afford to spend that much for pattern that may be replaced in four years.

The Army should have just paid the Marines to let them copy Marpat as Arpat or something and adopted their desert digital as well. They would have been so much better off.

I didn't realize the Marine digis were that old.

All the branches used to wear the same thing, there's no reason to not still do it.

I can see the difference. Not really a good thing considering it's camouflage.

I think this pattern is for environments plagued with wannabe airsofters.

Big Army pisses away more than that a year on various stupid bullshit.

All the branches used to wear the same thing, there's no reason to not still do it.

There's certainly no good reason for them not to. Air Force and Navy sure as fuck don't need special sets of camis.

I'm all in favor of going back to the BDU's when I first joined at this point. I'm over all the uniform changes and proposals every time some one gets bite by the good idea fairy. I'll probably be out of the service by the time they start fielding them to the rest of the Army that are not deploying.

Heh, the same guy that's running the VA now is the one responsible for the "brilliant" idea that everyone should wear berets.

You know I watched an interesting video on how the experimental night desert camo is actually great for woodland ops.

I've always been ashamed of UCP. I've always encouraged the men in my company to wear OCP (Multicam) during field exercises. This follows a long standing tradition of troops using better uniforms in the field than in garrison duty. Guess who is wearing Multicam in this photo...

The original picture is more stark. I may have a better one that contrasts how awful the UCP is and how righteous the OCP is in comparison. My squad leader in OCP is in the foreground on the right 1/3 of the photo.

While they were walking over open ground, it was painful to see beautifully executed squad wedges with the platoons in column marred by the fact that every man in UCP ACU's looked like a bright white target.

You know, the UCP works well here in Souther California for some reason. The chaparral plants and dirt, for whatever reason, really go well with the UCP. I still think Multicam is better, but was surprised that it 'worked' better than I'd of thought.

And really, on the photo above, the black rifles stick out the most to me on the soldiers!

It never gets old. I hope anyone involved with UCP's selection has to see that thing everyday for the rest of their lives. ;)

UCP works well in New Mexico in the wintertime between the hours of 0400 - 0700 and again between 1700 - 1800. The copied picture didn't do the sight justice. They looked like white pop-up targets in UCP. You're right, though, the M-4's stand out the most in open terrain like this.

What really allows them to be seen in this pic is their guns. That gunmetal black just doesn't blend. The guns should be camo'ed too.

Still better than UCP though by a laaaaaaaarge margin.

True, but are we judging how cool it looks or how effective? UCP isn't effective as the universal pattern that was it's intention, but I imagine it's still effective in areas where the DPMs are not.

Only if you test it against desert DPM in the forest or test it against woodland DPM in the desert. They did that when they tested UCP against MARPAT.
