The term ‘Techicals’ was born during the 1990’s Civil War in Somalia. Humanitarian organizations providing relief hired local Somali gunmen to protect aid shipments and warehouses. The expense for these local Gunmen was claimed on their expense reports as ‘technical assistance’. The gunmen used armed pickup trucks which were eventually referred to as ‘Technicals’.

I'm still waiting on some enterprising company to make a 1:18 Hilux / Taco so we can make proper technicals. They don't use fords or rams or nissans. They use toyotas.

I don't know why other than in the late 70's and 80's they had a reputation of being tough and cheap. I learned to drive on an '80 toyota 4x4 and got a '91 4x4 (before they started calling them Tacomas) when I got my license, and I drive an '08 now when I'm doing a construction project. I can say with certainty that they were both cheap and virtually indestructible.

Still, it astounds me that no 1:18 Toyota trucks exist. It's criminal. I have tiny plastic jihadists that need authentic transportation! ;)
