this is for one of my shelves..

the base is that stuff i always seen on here called foam core, i needed a 4ft length, so how do you do that? exactly it takes a genius to figure it out. i measured the width and length from 2 pieces of that stuff then i took two 5 gallon stir sticks and glued em to the two parts and made it one 4ft pc .... perfect..

next i built the sides and ribs as you can see in the dark pics, sorry the first few were from a phone.

then i filled it in using news paper like so.... and floated out the stir stick for a more level ground with 45 minute spackle that i mixed up. threw some dabs and crap here and there to add texture..

then i coated it with plaster cloth, and then covered it with 5 minute spackle mix, just the dust or powder after i sprayed it down with water. pretty tricky getting it right. then painted it with benny moore cieling white paint, only the best, and added some pegs, that was tricky as well, this whole project was tricky, but came out just like i designed in my head.. actually, i forgot, i brushed a coat of primer on, then sprayed a coat of primer on using a preval sprayer, and then sprayed the cieling paint on using a preval sprayer.

actually, i fucked up, i sprayed first then brushed. if you brush over unpainted spackle it pulls.. you have to get a base coat on and then you can brush.. then i sprayed the top coat..

thanks man.. i skipped a few process pics when taking the pics. that's why it went from news paper to finished. i didnt take pics of the plaster cloth or the 5 minute spackle dust i coated it with. that was a process in itself. i would wet it down with a spray bottle, and then coat it with some powder and then spray it and kept doing it. i wanted a powdery look, and then i sprayed it with some benjamin moore cieling paint i had with a tool called the preval. the pegs are a acrylic rods, i went with icey blue, i also got styrene tube and a smaller rod to fit in the middle, but it wasn't what i wanted. i wanted white, but it was to much work and not as sturdy, so went with the acrylic rod cause it was stiffer.

What the hell man! :D

Kidding, the process pics, even if they weren't "complete" were plenty helpful to get an idea of what you did. It's also cool to see the "behind-the-scenes" stuff.

Glad you posted this, it's one of my favorite arctic dios and a cool way to display on a shelf.

Man, that's brilliant!
I've used the same scenery technique before (during a brief flirtation with model railroading) but it didn't turn out as well as your diorama. :)

thanks, i just used basic plaster cloth methods, and added ribs to make ridges for the snow bank and then since i use spackle in real life for a living put that skill and knowledge into a dio.

Very excellent execution bro. Home run, Thanks for sharing this! welcome aboard.

you're welcome, man. eventually i will finish my other 3 shelves, and another dio that has been in the making for 2 years, lol..

thank you ed, and i'm not sure, i have a feeling they were drinking by the fire, you know how it is when you break the seal.

Nice, UC. I remember seeing that a while ago on HT, but I forgot how awesome it was.

Maybe a weird question, but do you have problems with dust with that? How easy is it to keep pure snow-white?

Welcome to the F118. :proposetoast:

actually, i dont have a problem with dust, when i designed the case, i had a 4 ft by 4 ft piece of 1/4 inch plexi glass fabricated for it. it was expensive, but worth it. and as long as you don't smoke in the house, it shouldn't turn yellow, if it was to ever yellow, all that would be needed is a can of stain blocker and then repaint it white again.
and thanks charade

thanks alot rick.

this whole thing was thought out using cheap material i figured would work, i'm in the paint trade, and i was thinking how could i make snow and what should i use, then i just started to think of material i use in the field. this was my first dio i ever actually made, and didnt use any of the average material used for dios except plaster cloth news paper and i needed a base, and seen lots of dios using foam core, so i thought of a way to use it as a base. it was pretty inventive, the whole process and use of materials. i also wanted to use pegs, or have pegs, so i used the acrylic rods.

thanks alot guys.

when i get over laziness and get back into gear, you will go nuts for the one i have on wait that i started 2 years ago. the whole thing will be encased in pine and a plexi glass hinged front, it will also have a fish tank light on the top. that got put on hold for two reasons, im a perfectionist, and i built a cat walk to go around a pipe i have coming out of a mountain. what slowed me down was figuring out a way to make hand rails for the cat walk. the cat walk and ladder are stellar. one day everyone will see it. i think i got the hand rails figured out, i grabbed some ripped pieces of scrap pine from a job sie, my first attempt didn't work how i wanted, then i came accrossed this ripped pices of pine and pretty much figured out what i will do.

Damn Bro this sounds wicked! I have a feeling after you spend a few hours looking through the diorama section here, your motivation will get ramped up.

You should start up a WIP thread on it and share some pics.
