how to make scarves /bandana

No matter what you use in my opinion, it'll look too bulky, unless you can find 1:18th scale thread.. or use those lego sails like Obi uses... not sure how you'd get the knot part though. Have you looked into sculpting on one or using plastic ones that came on other figures?

Get the thinnest cotton you can find and try out Willoughbians rigid soft goods tutorial...also check out scruffions dio thread...he uses napkins or something (probably the same thing KT did/does)...he has pics in his thread of some of his work...it looks great...he also made sand bags...
For that, you may wish to try a light silk. Even better if you can find something with a teeny tiny hounds tooth pattern.
I think I know what it is...it looks like layered string or thread...I know they make it with patterns in it...
I think if you take my skin decal tutorial, triple the thickness, mix your color with the matte medium and have at it, you'll get what you want. Plus, it can be adapted to add any sort of classic bandana pattern or camo.
I found this stuff doing an image search...it's twine...it looks good, but I'm not sure about the thickness of it...I'm gonna take a Joe with me to Joanne's tomorrow and check twine and the striped thread I've seen there and see which looks best...

I didn't do that, i wish!...haha...I was trying to figure out what the guy who did make that custom used for making the scarf...
This guys stuff is incredible. It's who inspired me to start using lego sail and hockey tape.

Here's a possible idea. Use yarn! I'm considering buying a roll and trying it out. Looks like it'll give you the same effect.
The funny thing is...
That guy was originally inspired by my Sideshow SE a few years back. That's what got him into using Lego stuff to make straps/pouches/etc. He was constantly on my heels about what materials to use and how to do certain things. Good guy too.
For the record/interesting tid-bit...
I started using Lego canvas back in early 2000's on Lego minifig customs. No one was doing it, because they couldn't bring themselves to cut up a Lego piece - purists, go figure.
By 2005, I used it a lot on SW customs. That started the initial craze, if you will.
Once the Joes resurfaced, I continued to use it - leading me to the infamous Sideshow SE, as well as other stuff.
It's funny when I see people referencing Lego canvas, and who they got the idea from. It's usually some other person who has had the material/technique handed down to them from yet another person.

I've tried this too...it looks pretty good...BUT, I can't find any that is striped aside from the stuff I had to order from ebay...without the stripes, it's kinda boring...though I guess you paint or marker some stripes on, but I don't think it would look as good as string that has stripes already in it...would also be a huge PITA
Maybe you could try para cord. It has strips in it and if you take the white core string out it is pretty thin.
