You can garrison. Couple drops of acrylic paint in container of rubbing alcohol and a big sloppy paintbrush. You just use the brush to make sure all parts are covered and then spraypaint it with a dull laquer after an hour or so. Spaceships and mechs are almost impossible to screw up since they are always depicted as dirty and aged. Just try to smooth out the drips like the one on my Y wing's left engine.
