The Future of Action Figures?

skylanders2Activision announced early in 2013 that since October 2011 the Skylanders franchise has generated more than $500 Million in sales.  Yes,  you read that right.. $500 Million!  The sequel Skylanders: Giants earned more than $195 Million in just 2 months in 2012.  The future of action figures has arrived. This announcement spread the web like wildfire.  Below is a quote from John Coyne, Vice President of Consumer Marketing, Activision Publishing:

“We’re humbled by the continued support and acclaim from parents, kids and critics alike, but more importantly, it’s gratifying to see kids excited about the adventures that await them both in the digital and physical worlds,”

The possibilities are endless now.  Several gamers are speculating that Nintendo will create a similar game featuring their huge Pokemon library,  others are expecting major players like Disney and Star Wars to jump on the bandwagon.  I’m still hoping for a more adult based game however I think it would be amazing to have a game based on the Marvel Franchises like X-Men and Avengers and dare I say a franchise that is important to almost everybody on this site. G.I.Joe.

One thing is for sure,  Activision isn’t going to let off the gas.  They just announced the 3rd game in the series titled Swap Force.  Swap Force is getting over 50 new action figures.  16 of these figures feature swappable parts that give you over 250 different variations that of course come alive in the game.  More info will be shown at Toy Fair 2013 and the game is planned for a Fall release.

I’m fully invested already playing and completing the first 2 games and having over 40 figures in my possession. I will be getting this new title on day 1 and eagerly awaiting updates at Toy Fair and beyond.  The real question now:  Is this the Future of Action Figures?

Opinions in this article are that of the author and not necessarily that of fighting118th.com.
