first thing you do when you get a figure?

Yea, random question, but a legit one. I started thinking about this yesterday. I had just got a package in the mail (Retal. Joe Trooper) and soon after opening it up I went to work. I glued down shit that I didn't want to fall off, removed gear I didn't want, and begin dry brushing his vest and gear. Does anyone else do this? I've done the same with the 3 pack beachhead recly and countless other figures. Hell, I can't remember the last time one of my figures had a sidearm that could be removed.

It might be from where I only use my Joes for photography, but what do you guys do?

I hardly ever tweak factory figures. I guess that's because I know they'll update them in a few years and the resale value will drop off. I try not to have too big a collection these days, so I make room for new stuff by selling old stuff. It's self sustaining as well.

But to answer the question, the first thing I always do with figures after I open them is check every joint to make sure there are no QC issues.

Where you least expect it
1. I rip open that sucker.

2. If I have a custom in mind I usually find myself ripping it up or changing gear.

3. as I change things I inspect the figure & look for the things that give it its cool factor. basically the stuff you don't really notice while its still in package.

Once opened and QC checked, I strip everything off to get the base figure. Depending on what I'm planning, I go from there. Usually means it gets cracked open for parts.

I fix the feet. Seriously.

Right out of the package they are either pidgeon toed or look like their ankles are broken.

After that it's up to seeing how much of their gear they can hold at one time and then snapping them onto their stand (if present) and posing them.

I check out the figure in the package, make sure it doesn't have some horrid flaw, and then I immediately go to my toy spreadsheet where I list all past and upcoming releases.

They are color-coded as to:
got-it
got-multiples
need-it
don't-want-it
it's-on-order
it's-in-my-BBTS-POL

etc, etc... I've got a whole system so I don't forget and rebuy or skip something that I needed because I couldn't remember what I've got. I keep the spreadsheet in dropbox so I can access it on my droid while in the store... updating the spreadsheet is ALWAYS priority number one when a new figure arrives. OCD maybe, but my collection would be a living nightmare otherwise...

It's funny seeing everyone's OCD behavior with these.

If it's a 25th carded figure, I always buy 2. This has obviously gotten expensive as fuck since the 25th came to a close, since anything is at least $30+/per figure and a goddamn exclusive. The best card stays carded, the other gets opened. If I'm lucky enough to get something like, say, 10+ Jinx, I pick the best 2 for the carded/opener of the lot then sell or trade off the others over time. :D

Anything since ROC, including POC/30th, I only buy one since I dislike the non-vintage card art. This at least saves a little money, I guess... I just look for the best eyes and paint apps, and make sure there is no molded damage to the actual sculpt in-store (on the few occasions that I actually find something in a store), and then I buy that one.

If it's a troop-builder, I generally open one first, wait a few days, and then open the rest up in case for some reason I end up hating the figure and don't want to keep the others. The last time I really got a bunch at one time, was in my BBTS POL when the 30th figures all released at the same time. I generally stand them up on my coffee table, and mess with them for a few days until my girlfriend gets sick of seeing them and I have to move them to my desk in the guest bedroom. From there, they may get modified or whatever.

The only "almost always" thing I do with any figure I open, is toss the plastic shell, toss the stupid stand in a giant bag full of all my other 25th/ROC stands (they're at least separated by ROC/25th) and then put the flat, full card in a drawer. I'm not really careful when tearing off the bubble, but I do keep the full card generally, and try not to bend the card itself. The back is usually partly torn off, though. Some guys use an X-Acto to cut them off, but I couldn't care less. I think the torn backing makes it feel more nostalgic, I guess?

I open them, sniff them. cause nothing smells better than freshly released plastic.

I used to work at EB Games in college...we had one strange bird who came in every week, and would stand there looking at games and he'd open up the empty cases off the shelf and smell them.

run like hell form security ...

.. Kidding! At this point I honestly debate if I should keep it or not. I feel like I appreciate my collection less with each new purchase.

I make sure all joints work accordingly and trim some plastic in the elbows if they can't get a nice bend.
