Dial-Tone intercepted an encoded signal from Cobra High Command that contained details about a top-secret prototype of the Night Raven that had previously been only rumored to exist. Previous sightings had been made by intel sources close to Rio de Janeiro, and a Joe team had been sent in to investigate. After having two U.S. Dragonhawks shot down somewhere over the jungles of Brazil by an unidentified fighter jet, Hawk sent two teams to find and take out the jet, and recover the pilots and any crew aboard that had survived.

As both teams made their route to Brazil, Dial-Tone and the tracking team aboard the Flagg detected the jet again over Brazil airspace, and Hawk sent Ace manning a Skystriker to bring down the mystery jet. After locking onto the confirmed target and deploying missiles, the jet was successfully shot down. The pilot ejected before the crash, much to his chagrin. Alpha Team, which was originally sent to capture the jet and headed by Duke, made a detour to the crash site as the mission was now to secure the wreckage and pilot for questioning.

Bravo Team, commanded by Flint, had been sent in with Cutter aboard the W.H.A.L.E. to find the downed Joe team members. After successfully finding Ripcord and Scarlett, who had been separated from the other Dragonhawk team, Bravo Team made their way to the crash site, as the Alpha Team had been hit by heavy fire from unknown forces. Meanwhile, intel was coming in that Crazy Legs had been captured, and that his non-Joe Army pilot and co-pilot had been killed in the crash.

After meeting up at the rendezvous point with the Alpha Team, Duke filled both teams in on the situation: after sighting the pilot and finding the wreckage, the Alpha team came under heavy fire and were driven farther into the jungle. Cobra forces recovered the digital recording console from the jet and destroyed the wreckage remains, while the pilot was pulled in by a small squad of Jungle Range-Vipers. Both Joe teams made it to a small clearing where ancient ruins stood, and took a stand against the faceless Cobra forces that had them cornered.

To retrieve his two teams, Hawk sent a third small team including Brazil specialist Claymore who was stationed nearby, along with Gung-Ho and Roadblock flown in by Lift-Ticket. After locking onto the two main threats—Cobra Jungle-Viper snipers—Low-Light, part of Alpha Team, took out both targets, making it safe for Lift-Ticket to drop in the recovery team. With Roadblock and team safely on the ground, Lift-Ticket made a quick exit to safety in the Tomahawk, awaiting further instructions to come in for the impending pickup. The Joes now stood a much better chance with Roadblock and company to lay down cover fire. Armed with a mini-gun and a lot of ammo, Roadblock quickly began taking out the Range-Vipers, the Twin Battle Guns, and any Cobra Troopers who were unfortunate enough to be within range...

Dude, that looks so fake. ;)

That wall came out real nice Rex! I like it. Only thing I think this needed was some more people taking cover to fire. A few of the shots it just seems like the figures are just chillin'. You may have crammed a little too much in there without at least one injury. Not knocking it because the whole set up looks nice, just a little too much happenin' in that small area and not a damn ounce of blood. Who does that? ;) I think this set up would look real good with them searching the area. Make it look all quiet and spooky.

I really dig the spent shells on the ground. That is a great touch. Really makes that action pop. What Roadblock figure is that? Only thing I would have really done different would have been a few poses, other than that you did a nice job with the set up. I'm sure the girl will be happy that's over now. Careful though, once you start dioramas they become engulfing.

Still, great job all together. Was this your first larger diorama? I don't recall seeing any from you before.

WOW!

that is just full of win! Great setup and even better choices of figures. My favorite pics are of Resolute RB, I fucking love that fig and the lone shot of Outback. Awesome job bro!

Well shit.

I'm out.

Haha, out of what?

Yeah, to be honest, I was just shooting for the May banner. Which is why Duke (and most every other figure) is doing the same damn pose in nearly every shot. I ended up having to take nearly 200 photos just because my point-and-shoot is so finicky. I hope to shoot my next dio with a DSLR, but my girl took it this morning and I got impatient. I had enough figures that I just bullshitted some story. To be honest, I kind of liked the setup, so I'll probably continue the story... (And there will be some casualties, next time. I'll plan ahead.)

Yup, this is really my first dio. I should be able to do quite a lot with the 2 "worlds" I have made in the last month or so. I have this jungle setup, and it's all modular. The next jungle one I shoot will use the same props, just rearranged. The city one (seen partially in my tutorial thread) will probably be next thing I shoot though. Not sure if I'll shoot it tonight or not, since I need to get to work on some work-work stuff for my job.

I'd like to throw in some vehicles next time, and some Cobras actually fighting instead of being a footnote.

Thanks man. It's a hybrid Roadblock. The body is the Wal-Mart one from the playset, which looks better in the jungle anyway. I flat-clear-coated the black "undershirt" and added the prototype/test-shot Resolute RB vest. It's slightly different than the regular RB's vest deco. The head is some BnB figure that Eddie pointed out to me. The idea for the BnB head was all his. The only thing I dislike about Resolute RB is the slightly-Wolfman head. The beard's a tad overgrown. This head, with a goatee and stache painted on, is perfect for Roadblock. Also, the BnB head matched the Wal-Mart flesh tone better. The Resolute one is more red-toned and doesn't match.

that lone dark shot of RB (7th down i think) is beautiful...the spent shells look amazing in that one...not sure if you planned it, but the light sorce seems to eminate from the mini blast...the gritting teeth on RB is so good for what you did with him...

geeze, so many look good...one of RB with his back to Flint looks real nice...the candid posing is really cool...

the pulled out ones are cool too...get to see a lot at once, including more wall and background...

speaking of the background, nice job!...did you end up getting a bigger one or did you shop it in?...i think the 9th one down, Scarlett in the center bottom of the shot, is a good example of how nice the background looks...appears to be a nice sunny day in the jungle

The shell gimmick worked really well in most of the shots. I want to try another one later, because the stupid super glue did the frosting thing because I wasn't careful enough. It was a good test though.

I did 3 background sheets taped to boxes that I could move around. The seams, I just tried to avoid, haha. There are a few I had to extend the background slightly, because it was either open air or the cardboard box I had it taped to...

I got some pretty decent high-res images of jungles that worked well. I'd really like to print a large poster and mount it to a board, because the smaller sheets don't make a great large backdrop. I prefer to do it in-shot than "greenscreening" it, especially since I'm doing multiple shots. If it was a one-off, 'shopping in the background wouldn't be so tedious or noticeable from shot to shot.

Crazylegs' rescue will happen when I get the sucker. :) It was a nod to my failure at getting him (twice this weekend!) at retail, so I wrote him out of the story. I guess I'll ship my BBTS shipment before long.

Oh yeah, that one. Yeah, the flash blew out the photo, so I had to play with the lighting a good bit in Photoshop. My girl just shot a bunch with her Canon DSLR, so I'll post a few more in a little bit. They should be much better quality of lighting and focus.

Finally, some shots with the DSLR. They came out much better, and Blood, I tried to play up the poses a bit more. Got some Cobra troops in there to boot:

Awesome pics and set-up! A few of the pics illustrate just how hard it is to get some figures to hold their weapons (Flint and Lowlight) but you did a good job posing them. What did you do for the firing effect on Roadblock's machine gun? I can't tell if it's a plastic piece (like the blast effects from Iron Man & MU) or some photoshop magic.

Thanks fellas! I had a blast as this was my first real dio shoot and I had fun and learned a good deal. Joes are worse than Dominoes.

X, which pic? Maybe Duke needs to be shot in the ass.

Eddie, the wide shots turned out great. Only thing I dislike is that the gun belt effect doesn't look great from the "under" side, as you see the frosted glue. I'll have to redo that next time I use that effect so it's cleaner.

Greg, nice to see folks from NC joining! I'm an NC native and lived im Raleigh for 7 years prior to moving west. The gun blast is done in-camera, but in a few shots I did play with the lighting on it a little. It's a mini-gun blast from an IM2 War Machine.

And yes, some of the figures are awful at holding their weapons. Flint doesn't bother me so much but Duke and the Cobra troops are a huge pain to get looking remotely right, considering the weapons they come with. I will probably use Vipers next time and keep Troopers reserved for maintenance type shots. They hold the RPG and handguns decently enough. LL can't shoulder his rifle, and that is really annoying.

Raleigh is a nice place... I think I've been living here for eight years now. Can't complain one bit.

I knew the gun blast looked familiar! It looks perfect on the gatling gun, good job! I looked at your pics again and noticed the shell casings coming from the gun... very clever! That level of detail is astounding.

I think Lowlight's inability to hold his rifle was my only disappointment about the figure. Hasbro should've tooled some new arms instead of using the bulky ones from the Jungle Viper. I don't have them in my collection anymore, but I do remember the Duke and Cobra Trooper arms being a pain in the rear... It was even worse that they didn't have sculpted trigger fingers like many figures do now.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out how I would replicate the gun blast effect without cheating with Photoshop (which is always an option for dio stories, but I was trying to get as much in-camera as possible) and then I realized that I had that War Machine figure perched on my desk. Quickly stolen, I added a light red wash to it (because the base one is a flexible, semi-transparent yellow mold) and it fit perfectly on the ROC Heavy Duty mini-gun. I was going to use a Marauder's mini-gun which is more realistically sized, but it looked tiny when displayed with Roadblock.

I'd never really been bothered much by most figures' inability to hold their weapons in many poses because I had them mostly on a shelf (when I had room to display them) but the Cobra Trooper has always had the worst hands. Even Duke hands can hold the weapon, but the Cobra Trooper grip is almost like a Lego man hand. Low-Light is an awesome figure, but I agree on the articulation with the rifle... Funny that both snipers can't really hold their sniper rifles properly.

Great work! I love the scale of your dio, by that I mean you have back ground, lots of characters, etc.

And what did you do to make those bullet casings?

Great job tieing it all in. MB has some good points but with what your goal was (May Banner) you came up with a goodie. Like how you suspended the spent shells. Clever. Didn't notice it (strip of clear plastic) until looking at some of the other shots

Thanks man. I swear I thought I commented on this thing last. Guess not. The shells was one of my favorite things about this dio.

The bullet casings are actually little gold beads I got at Michael's or JoAnn's. You should be able to find them in the bead/necklace aisle. They work perfectly for shells!

It's amazing how much better the DSLR pics came out. Amazing setup you created, almost looks like a CGI movie.

For some reason, Duke's head reminds me of Dubya Bush. :D

He's gotta get captured first. I think I'm going to go backwards first and show what happened "meanwhile" all this was happening with the Star Viper and Crazylegs that led up to the showdown. :)

I didn't notice the extra pics on page 2. Those Outback pics are clear as hell. They look really good. My 2 favs are the single shots of Flint. The best one is the one where he's facing the camera. I also like the solo shot of SE with Ambush peeking around the corner.

The ruins are absolutely top. Great model building and painting work. Congratulations. You have definitively won a fan in Brazil.

Thanks man. I hope I didn't offend you in my depiction of "Brazil". I had someone at one of the other Joe sites poke fun at it. It's not accurate by any means, but part of the fictional Joe verse in which "Special Mission: Brazil" lives. :)

so uhh, plan'n on doing some more of this dio?

Eh, I gotta find time. About 2 weeks before I went on vacation, and now 2 weeks after vacation, I've been having to catch up at work so I could go on the vacation in the first place. Sucks how that works.

I'd like to do a part 2, or a prequel, or something... Maybe wrap up the story now that I have a few more of the figures that took part in the story (yet were absent).
