what in God's name is Green Stuff?

I've seen it mentioned everywhere, and have always been curious about it.

What exactly is it? How would a simpleton as myself use it?
I've seen it at the comic store that I buy my paint from, and I am very curious about it.

a two part sculpting medium you see a most of the warhammer guys use it. Its decent, has its advantages. but your better off with Aves apoxie sculpt.

unlike Aves, one of Grenstuffs few advantages is that it still retains some flexibility when cured. Which makes it ideal for sculpting on web gear. Definietly worth trying out

I just used GreenStuff for the first time, on my TMNT. I like it so far, but it is very tacky when applying. Daremo suggested dabbing your finger in water to rectify this. It also helped when using a tool to apply any details.

I've used green stuff on a lot of customs. It's especially helpful if you need the sculpt to be flexible or if you want to copy details from other things or fix up cast pieces. I've never used Aves but from what I've seen you get better results when it comes to fine details. You could use green stuff to make push molds of any pouches to make copies to use on your vests.

Here's a few examples:

Storm Shadow - green stuff sculpted over a 25th ninja body

Removable ninja mask and sculpted arms made from green stuff

Gender Bender Sgt. Slaughter - Green stuff boobs

Shin-Gouki from Street Fighter - Sculpted hair, torn sleeves, and gloves

Bic Boy - Green stuff sculpted over Tomax/Xamot torso and filled joints

Self Custom - Green stuff belt

Ultimate Ninja - Green Stuff sculpted over an Asphalt blank torso

COD Brazilian Militia - Green stuff removable bandana

Wow, that is pretty awesome. Doesn't seem that hard to get the hang of. Is it?

I think you could get the hang of it pretty quickly. Storm Shadow was the first custom I did and the first time that I used green stuff. It's actually surprisingly easy to work with as long as you keep water near by (to keep the green stuff from sticking to your fingers and tools). It helps to work on a little bit at a time if you're sculpting larger areas so you don't mess up the parts you've already completed.

god damn Daremo, you NEED to make a thread just featuring your customs :)

Yeah, I should really do that some time soon.

For a harder finish, I really prefer Epoxy Sculpt. 1+ hour working time, can be painted, drilled and even tapped. It's not too sticky after the first 5-10 minutes, and it's more like firm clay that I find lends itself to holding more detail (unless you really need the flex, like on web gear).

I'd prefer something that will hold fine details. Plus I think if it dries harder it'll world greater on the vest. As in gluing it on or whatever.

You can paint, drill, sand, glue, and tap green stuff too. You can also vary the hardness depending on the mix ratio. More blue (hardener) makes it more rigid and more yellow will make it more flexible. I wish I could remember what parts you need to mix, but I think it's that you can combine the yellow of green stuff with the hardener of aves to get a really flexible mix that still retains a lot of detail. I'll try to find the link.

I really need to try Aves this year and work on getting better at sculpting.

That's the link, thanks, Mswi!

If you do try out green stuff, go for the tube style that has the 2 parts separated. I used to get the tape/ribbon form early on and found out that more often than not that the middle part would mix in the package and cause lumps in your sculpt. You could cut out the middle but then you end up wasting a lot of it.

I'm pretty pro green stuff when it comes to sculpting mediums but that's only because I haven't tried anything else. Find what works for you and you'll be doing alright. I've heard nothing but good stuff about Aves Fixit Sculpt.

I started out with kneadite/greenstuff, moved to Aves Apoxie then to Aves Fixit. Prefer Fix-it to the others by far, but ultimately it comes down to whatever keeps you sculpting

Yeah, that's pretty much the progression I took too. Fixit seems to be the most versatile to work with for my needs. Also, I bought the larger tubs. While the tubs are not cheap, per unit it's far more cost effective.

I often add lots of detail to ES once it dries, just by sanding and using fine dremel tools. I just get it "close" while working with the soft material and fine-tune once it's hardened.

That's exactly what I do too...the detail seems to be sharper done this way...though I use Mighty Putty you can find in the "As Seen On TV" section :D

I ordered some over a year or two ago. I hope it's still good, it's in a drawer somewhere. I've been meaning to try my hand at sculpting, but it's been nearly 10 years since I sculpted anything in art school. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a tad anxious about it.

I bought Games Workshop greenstuff back in the early ninties and never used it until my first custom in late 2007. I'd say it's stays good for a while.

I just got some Aves Fixit in the mail today, looking forward to sculpting some with it. I have used Green Stuff up to this point but from everything I have seen Aves seems to be the way to go if you want to really get into adding fine detail to your customs. I have found Green Stuff to be really tacky and hard to accomplish the finer details, no matter how much water is nearby and no matter what kind of mixture ratios I use. Either way, I am excited to start sculpting with Aves.

I've used Aves and just recently tried Milliput, they are almost the same thing.

I'm currently using Magic Sculpt.
http://www.artplace.com/magic-sculpt-epoxy-clay/

Its consistency is different from Milliput (a bit like chewing gum when mixed) and is less messy when you smooth it with water. It's less sticky and doesn't leave as much residue on your fingers as Milliput does. It sets rock-hard in about 12 hours.

I've also tried mixing in some artists acrylic paint while kneading it, and it seemed to work well.

Lots of potential Eddieisms in there.

There's quite a few lol.

I need to start thinking about which would be better for my usage. Green stuff is actually within driving distance. Everything else I'd have to order.

.

That's what irritates me about Milliput, that consistency when fresh.

Still, I have it, so I'm thinking about seing if I can use it to make press-molds of some of the Dragon U.S. gear and 21st Vietnam stuff so I have a supply for all these damn customs I want to do.
