My custom ODA Team (Green Berets)

So before our forum had it's... catastrophe, I had a few threads about my custom ODA Team. For those of you who don't know, an "ODA" is a small team (usually 12 men) of U.S. Army Special Forces "Green Berets". O.D.A. stands for Operational Detachment Alpha.

The idea was fairly simple:
G.I. Joe, in my mind, will always be attached to the 80's and 90's.
In as much, I hate the new Army ACU's. I think they're ugly and it's ridiculous that you can't roll up the sleeves (officially). Plus, I miss the old boots, especially the jungle boots.
Consequntly, I wanted to make a team of all the Joes who are Army Special Forces qualified that looked like a Green Beret Team from the 80's and 90's. Because in my Joeverse, the Joes don't wear ACU's... they have modernized BDU's, and they still wear woodland camo.

Anyway, I thought I'd repost some of the earlier figures and also add the brand new 3 characters/figures. Hope y'all like them.

not really a constructive critcism as much as a "What I would have done"

But on the second figure in the first post I would have painted the zipper silver(vallejo air alluminum is by far the best silver I have put my hands on the brush, and thats gotta be 30+ colors) or green, as it would give it a little more pop.

Same with recondo and snake eyes, the torsos are just too plain for the potential they have. I'd personally paint the belt on recondo a color that stands out a little more, like a tan or brown. I'd also atleast paint the pouches brown or tan on snake eyes' web gear, if not paint it all brown or tan. They just need a little more pop IMO, but overall are fantastic customs!

It's all my buddy, Marine Deadpool. I pick the parts and ship them to him, he does the painting and assembly. He's great to work with.

Absolutely outstanding!!!!!!! Love, love, love the work. Makes those guys look straight out of SF and makes them uniform in color(instead of the rainbow of colors Hasblow makes Joes).

As far as uniforms are concerened, in my Joeverse, since G.I. Joe is such a covert special ops team, they're kind of on their own as far as what they wear and what weapons they use. Plain and simple. I mean, what uniforms Hasbro "puts" them in now doesn't resemble ACUs. So they have modified BDUs, is the way I see it.

Yeah, My Joes wear modified BDUs, basically what Army Special Operations was wearing just before the ACUs came out. They used to take the lower pockets from the BDU blouse (the ones that NOBODY used) and had them sewed on the sleeves at an angle - wear the new ACU pockets are.

I'm actually working on this idea for my Halloween costume for this year... I'll post pics.

Most of my Joes have the ROC Jungle Assault Ripcord body (lots of head swaps and caucasion paint on the necks of the non-minority Joes!) since Hasbro doesn't have anything remotely close to the ACU look, and so far it's my favorite Joe uniform. I just wish it had more green in it ("Jungle" Assault?!). So at least there's some form of organization within the ranks of my Joes when it comes to their uniforms.

Too bad Hasbro didn't capitolize on the JoeCon 2011 Wet Suit uniform for other figures. That, to me, is the epitome of how the Joes should look. It's a shame that a uniform like that isn't available on a Joe figure in the stores, but instead only for the convention figure. It's not perfect but looks better (IMHO) than the ROC Jungle Assault Ripcord uniform. But for now I'll take what I can get!

That's a good way to go. I really like the Reactive Impact Armor torso; I know some people didn't care for it, but I actually thought it looked great... and it's got a lot of potential for paint aps. I do agree about the Club's Wet-Suit: more Joes should look like that. It's realy only a matter of paint because they've got some great parts to work with by now. Honestly, when I'm thinking of this ODA team, one of the biggest factor in parts selection is: "OK, what combination would look good and we haven't seen from Hasbro?" And then, of course, Marine Deadpool makes the parts come alive with his paint job. Often, even though I'm the one picking parts and paint colors - so I have an idea of what it should look like in my mind - when I see his pics, they look so much better than I imagine.

On my Joes with the Jungle Assault Ripcord bodies, I left the combat tactical vest on them, and left them black, although I painted the green straps black. I would've preferred the vests to be OD Green, and I may get adventurous one day and paint them that color, but for now the black doesn't look too bad, I guess.
